                          WHAT IS TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum which is age and developmentally appropriate.  The TK program is designed as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten.

The TK program was implemented when California changed the age requirement to start Kindergarten in 2010 under the Kindergarten Readiness Act.  Under this new law, children must now turn 5 on or before September 1st, where previously children could enroll if they turned 5 on or before December 2nd.   Even though this new requirement may seem small, California created the TK program to give children affected by this change to have the opportunity to continue to build their skills and abilities.  Research shows that children who attend kindergarten readiness programs such as preschool, TK or similar programs offered by public or private organizations are more likely to do well in school and attend college.

To qualify for the BUSD TK program in the 2023/2024 school year your child must turn 5 years old between September 2nd 2023 and April 2nd 2024.

If your child does not meet the age requirements for TK or Kindergarten, please click here to see what grade your child will be placed when enrolled.

What is Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a one year program that is based on the Common Core State Standards curriculum which is age and developmentally appropriate.  Students will attend school daily for four hours.  You may ask, why is Kindergarten important, its only four hours a day?  Research shows that student who attend programs before Kindergarten and First grade are more likely to do well in school and go on to college.  Here are some of the Common Core State Standards your child will learn in Kindergarten.
