Dear 8th Grade Students and Families,

As students begin planning for high school, we want to share information regarding the opportunity to express interest in attending Independence High School (IHS) or the Independence Virtual Academy (IVA) for the 2026–2027 school year.

Please note that Independence Virtual Academy (IVA) is a new program being introduced this year as part of Independence High School’s expanded learning options for students and families.

Independence High School is an alternative education high school within the Liberty Union High School District designed to support students whose needs may not be fully met in a traditional comprehensive high school setting. IHS offers a hybrid independent study model that combines limited on-campus instruction with at-home coursework through Canvas.

Independence Virtual Academy (IVA) is a program within IHS that provides a fully online, asynchronous learning option using EdgeEX (Imagine Edgenuity). Students enrolled in IVA complete all coursework from home and meet virtually with their assigned teacher.

Please note:

• Placement into IHS or IVA is not automatic or guaranteed.

• Families interested in either program must complete the IHS Interest Form.

• Student recommendations are reviewed based on academic performance, attendance, work completion, and other

  schoolsupport data.

• Final placement decisions are made by Independence High School and LUHSD administration.

If approved, students will be pre-enrolled at IHS, and families will be required to attend a mandatory New Student Orientation before the start of the school year.

For students with an IEP, requests will first be reviewed by the LUHSD Special Services Department. Incoming 9th-grade students with IEPs must complete pre-enrollment requirements with their designated LUHSD comprehensive high school site before any transfer request can be processed.
