Standard 1: Word analysis, fluency, and systematic vocabulary development
Students know about the basic features of reading; letters, words, and sentences. They know how to translate letter patterns into spoken language by using phonics, syllabication and word parts. They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading.

Students listen to, read, and respond to a wide variety of significant works of children's literature. They distinguish between structural features of the text and literary terms or elements.

3.2 Generate alternative endings to plots and identify reason or reasons for, and impact of, the alternatives
3.3 Compare and contrast different versions of the same stories that reflect different cultures

Standard 4: Writing Strategies
Students write clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea. Their writing shows they consider audience and purpose. Students progress through the stages of the writing process.
